Looking for a Netball Club in Brentwood?
Finding the right netball club for your child can feel like a big decision.
There are several things to consider beyond simply finding somewhere that offers a weekly training session. You want to know whether the club is suitable for your child’s age and ability, whether the coaching is right for them, whether they will have opportunities to play matches and, most importantly, whether they will enjoy being part of the club.
If you’re searching for netball clubs in Brentwood, Essex, this guide explains what parents should consider when choosing the right club.

What Should You Look for in a Netball Club?
Every player is different.
A child who has never played netball may need a very different environment from an experienced player looking for more competitive opportunities.
When comparing clubs, consider the following.
1. Age Groups
First, check that the club offers a programme suitable for your child’s age.
Netball clubs may organise players by school year, age group or playing level.
A good junior pathway should allow players to progress as they get older rather than having to find a completely different club every few years.
Look for opportunities covering the journey from younger juniors through to teenage and adult netball.
2. Experience and Ability
Does the club cater for beginners as well as experienced players?
A good club should be able to explain where a new player can start and how an experienced player can continue to develop.
Your child doesn’t necessarily need to be the best player before joining.
In fact, a supportive development environment should help players improve over time.
3. Quality of Coaching
Coaching can have a huge impact on a player’s experience.
Look for coaches who:
- Create a positive environment
- Understand different levels of ability
- Teach rather than simply organise games
- Give players constructive feedback
- Encourage players to ask questions
- Develop technical skills
- Teach tactical understanding
- Understand age-appropriate physical development
- Help players build confidence
Good coaching isn’t just about winning matches.
It is about helping players understand the game and become better players.
4. Regular Training
Ask how frequently the team trains and what happens during those sessions.
A useful training session should have a purpose.
Depending on the age and level of the player, sessions might include:
- Passing
- Catching
- Footwork
- Shooting
- Dodging
- Movement
- Defensive skills
- Interceptions
- Attacking principles
- Tactical decision-making
- Game scenarios
- Fitness
- Speed and agility
The quality of the session matters just as much as the amount of time spent on court.
5. Competitive Opportunities
If your child wants to play competitive netball, find out what opportunities the club provides.
Competitive matches help players develop skills that can be difficult to replicate during training.
Players learn to:
- Make decisions under pressure
- Communicate with teammates
- Respond to mistakes
- Adapt to different opponents
- Manage pressure
- Apply tactical concepts
- Work together as a team
Not every player needs to play at the same competitive level.
The important thing is finding an environment that matches the player’s ambitions and development.
6. Player Development
One of the biggest questions parents should ask is:
“How will my child develop if they stay at this club?”
Look for a club that can explain its player-development philosophy.
This could include:
- Individual feedback
- Position-specific development
- Player reviews
- Development goals
- Technical coaching
- Tactical coaching
- Strength and conditioning
- Additional training opportunities
- Pathways into older age groups
- Opportunities to progress into adult netball
A player should have opportunities to improve rather than simply repeat the same training every week.
7. A Clear Pathway
Ideally, a club should provide a pathway that allows players to continue playing as they grow.
For a young player, that pathway could look something like:
Introduction → Development → Competitive Netball → Advanced Development → Adult Netball
The exact route will be different for every player.
Some will want to play competitively.
Some will simply want to enjoy playing with friends.
Others may eventually want to pursue higher-level opportunities.
A good club should be able to support different ambitions.
What About Beginners?
Parents sometimes worry that their child isn’t good enough to join a netball club.
That shouldn’t be a barrier.
Many players start netball without knowing the rules, positions or techniques.
A good introductory programme should help players learn:
- How to hold and pass the ball
- Catching
- Footwork
- Basic rules
- Court movement
- Simple attacking and defensive concepts
- Teamwork
- Confidence
The most important thing is that players feel comfortable learning.
Netball for Girls in Brentwood
Netball provides young players with much more than sporting skills.
Being part of a team can help children develop:
- Confidence
- Communication
- Resilience
- Leadership
- Responsibility
- Teamwork
- Decision-making
- Friendships
- Physical fitness
For many players, their netball club becomes an important part of their social life as well as their sporting development.
Netball Clubs and School Netball
Parents don’t necessarily have to choose between school netball and club netball.
They can complement each other.
School netball can provide opportunities to represent a school and play with classmates, while a club environment can provide regular specialist coaching and additional competitive opportunities.
Playing in different environments can also help players become more adaptable.
What About Older Players?
Netball doesn’t have to stop when a player leaves primary school.
A strong club pathway can allow players to continue through secondary school and, eventually, into adult netball.
For older players, look for clubs offering:
- Year 7–9 opportunities
- Year 10–11 opportunities
- Competitive junior netball
- Development programmes
- Performance opportunities
- Transition into adult netball
- Appropriate strength and conditioning
This can make a significant difference to long-term participation.

Questions to Ask Before Joining a Netball Club
Before committing to a club, don’t be afraid to ask questions.
Ask about training
- Where does training take place?
- How often do teams train?
- How long are sessions?
- What does a typical session involve?
Ask about competition
- Do teams play league matches?
- Are there tournaments?
- What level of competition is available?
- How are players selected for matches?
Ask about development
- How are players assessed?
- Do coaches provide individual feedback?
- Are there development plans?
- Are there additional training opportunities?
Ask about progression
- What happens when players move into the next age group?
- Is there a pathway into senior netball?
- Are there opportunities for players who want to develop further?
Ask about the culture
Perhaps the most important question:
Does my child enjoy being there?
A player who feels supported, valued and encouraged is much more likely to continue playing and developing.
How Much Does Junior Netball Cost?
Club fees vary depending on the club, age group, training frequency and level of competition.
When comparing fees, don’t look only at the headline price.
Consider what is included.
For example:
- Weekly training
- League entry
- Match fees
- Coaching
- Additional training
- Tournaments
- Development programmes
- Equipment
- Membership requirements
The cheapest option isn’t necessarily the best value, and the most expensive isn’t automatically the best.
Look at the overall experience your child will receive.
Finding the Right Netball Club in Brentwood
There isn’t one perfect netball club for every player.
The best club is the one that matches the player’s:
Age.
Ability.
Ambition.
Personality.
Availability.
Development needs.
For some players, the priority may be making friends and enjoying the sport.
For others, it may be developing skills and playing competitive netball.
Others may want a structured pathway towards higher-level performance.
The important thing is finding a club that can support your child’s individual journey.
