What Is Netball?
Netball is a team sport played between two teams of seven players.
The objective is simple: score more goals than your opponents before the final whistle.
Although it shares some similarities with basketball, netball has its own unique rules, positions and style of play.
Players pass the ball down the court using speed, movement and teamwork before shooting from inside the shooting circle.
Because players cannot run while holding the ball, quick decision-making and intelligent movement are key to success.
The Seven Netball Positions
Each player has a specific role on the court.
Goal Shooter (GS)
The Goal Shooter is responsible for scoring goals.
They remain close to the shooting circle and work closely with the Goal Attack to create scoring opportunities.
Goal Attack (GA)
The Goal Attack supports attacking play and also scores goals.
They move around the shooting circle and help feed the Goal Shooter.
Wing Attack (WA)
The Wing Attack links the centre court to the shooters.
Excellent passing, movement and vision are essential in this position.
Centre (C)
The Centre covers the largest area of the court.
They start every centre pass and are constantly involved in both attack and defence.
Wing Defence (WD)
Wing Defence players aim to stop attacking players receiving the ball and create turnovers.
Goal Defence (GD)
Goal Defence players defend the shooting circle while also helping move the ball into attack after winning possession.
Goal Keeper (GK)
The Goal Keeper marks the opposition Goal Shooter and protects the goal circle.
Strong positioning, timing and communication are vital.
How Do You Score in Netball?
Goals can only be scored by:
- Goal Shooter (GS)
- Goal Attack (GA)
Players must be standing completely inside the shooting circle when they take the shot.
Each successful shot scores one goal.
The team with the most goals at the end of the match wins.
Basic Netball Rules
Some of the key rules include:
No Running With the Ball
Once a player catches the ball, they must stop and establish a landing foot.
Three-Second Rule
Players have only three seconds to pass or shoot after receiving the ball.
Footwork
Players must keep one foot grounded as their landing foot before passing or shooting.
Incorrect movement results in a footwork penalty.
Contact
Players cannot make physical contact that interferes with an opponent.
Good defending relies on positioning rather than pushing or holding.
Obstruction
Defenders must stand at least 0.9 metres (3 feet) away when marking a player with the ball.
How Long Is a Netball Match?
A standard game is usually made up of four quarters.
Depending on the league or competition, each quarter is commonly 15 minutes long with short breaks between quarters.
Junior competitions may use shorter quarters.
What Equipment Do You Need?
Getting started is easy.
Most beginners need:
