A Beginner’s Guide to Getting Started

If you’ve ever wondered how to start playing netball, you’re not alone. Every year, thousands of children, teenagers and adults discover netball for the very first time.

The good news is that netball is one of the easiest sports to begin. You don’t need years of experience or expensive equipment—just a willingness to learn, stay active and enjoy being part of a team.

At Brentwood Apex Netball Club, we welcome beginners of all ages and abilities. Whether you’re a parent looking for a club for your child or an adult returning to the sport after many years, we’ll help you take your first steps with confidence.

What Is Netball?

Netball is a fast-paced team sport played by two teams of seven players. The aim is simple: work together to move the ball through the court and score goals by shooting through the opposition’s hoop.

Unlike basketball, players cannot run while holding the ball, making passing, movement and teamwork the key to success.

Netball is suitable for players of all abilities and is a fantastic way to improve fitness, coordination, confidence and communication.

Who Can Play Netball?

The simple answer is almost anyone.

Netball is enjoyed by:

Primary school children
Secondary school students
Adults returning to sport
Complete beginners
Experienced players
Social players
Competitive athletes

Whether your goal is to have fun, improve your fitness or compete in league matches, there is a place for you in the netball community.

What Equipment Do You Need?

One of the great things about netball is that you don’t need much to get started.

For your first session, you’ll usually need:

Comfortable sports clothing
Supportive trainers suitable for indoor or outdoor courts
A bottle of water
A positive attitude and willingness to learn

As you continue playing, your club may provide information about team kit and any additional equipment.

Learn the Basic Rules

Before your first training session, it helps to understand a few simple rules.

Some of the most important include:

You cannot run while holding the ball.
You must pass or shoot within three seconds.
Each player has designated court areas depending on their position.
Physical contact should not unfairly disadvantage another player.
Goals can only be scored by the Goal Shooter (GS) or Goal Attack (GA) from inside the shooting circle.

Don’t worry if you don’t know every rule straight away—your coaches will guide you through them.

Understanding Netball Positions

There are seven positions in netball, and each has a unique role within the team:

Goal Shooter (GS)
Goal Attack (GA)
Wing Attack (WA)
Centre (C)
Wing Defence (WD)
Goal Defence (GD)
Goal Keeper (GK)

As you develop, you’ll discover which positions best suit your skills and strengths.

Your First Training Session

Your first session should be enjoyable and relaxed.

You’ll typically take part in:

Fun warm-up activities
Ball-handling exercises
Passing and catching drills
Footwork practice
Shooting activities
Small-sided games
Match play

Coaches understand that everyone starts somewhere, so there is no expectation that beginners know everything on day one.

Tips for New Netball Players

Starting a new sport can feel exciting and a little nerve-racking. These simple tips will help you enjoy your first few sessions:

Arrive a little early to meet your coach.
Ask questions if you’re unsure.
Listen carefully during demonstrations.
Encourage your teammates.
Don’t worry about making mistakes.
Keep practising between sessions.
Most importantly, have fun.

Every experienced player was once a beginner.
